St. James Cheese Company owners Danielle and Richard Sutton ran a 200 year old cheese shop in London until June of 2006 when they moved to New Orleans and brought their highly trained nose for cheese with them. They provide the widest range of perfectly ripe cheeses in town. At St. James the staff is very hands on. You can try any of the cheeses, both domestic and imports. They try to cater to not only those who love cheese, but the novice cheese eater as well. The meat is also of the highest quality. St. James offers a variety of groceries such as Dilly Beans, fine olive oils, and cheese paraphernalia. The cafe aspect is a menu that changes daily full of sandwiches, salads, and charcuterie/cheese plates. The Mozzarella Sandwich with salami and pesto is a staple on the menu. They even offer a Mini-Moo for the children. There are a few tables inside, a few on a first floor balcony facing beautiful Prytania, and a fair amount of tables in a courtyard area surrounded by the modern architecture of the St. James building. If you feel you might need a breath of fresh air on a nice afternoon let the St. James staff build you a picnic to take to the park. They always have culinary events planned, so keep your eyes open for those. Upcoming ones are Dinner with Chef Greg Sonnier on August 14 and Vegetarian Dinner with Anne Churchill on August 21. The St. James Cheese Company is a highlight of New Orleans. Not only will they provide quality groceries, but they are an absolute must for lunch.
